El Día de Muertos es una celebración mexicana de origen prehispánico que honra a los difuntos el 2 de noviembre, comienza el 1 de noviembre.

Los orígenes de la celebración del Día de Muertos en México son anteriores a la llegada de los españoles. Hay registro de celebraciones en las etnias Mexica, Maya, Purépecha, Náhuatl y totonaca. Los rituales que celebran la vida de los ancestros se realizan en estas civilizaciones por lo menos desde hace tres mil años. En la era prehispánica era común la práctica de conservar los cráneos como trofeos y mostrarlos durante los rituales que simbolizaban la muerte y el renacimiento.

Para los antiguos mexicanos, la Muerte no tenía las connotaciones morales de la religión católica, en la que las ideas de infierno y paraíso sirven para castigar o premiar. Por el contrario, ellos creían que los rumbos destinados a las almas de los muertos estaban determinados por el tipo de muerte que habían tenido, y no por su comportamiento en la vida.

De esta forma, las direcciones que podrían tomar los muertos son:

El Tlalocan o paraíso de Tláloc, dios de la lluvia. A este sitio se dirigían aquellos que morían en circunstancias relacionadas con el agua: los ahogados, los que morían por efecto de un rayo, los que morían por enfermedades como la gota o la hidropesía, la sarna o las bubas, así como también los niños sacrificados al dios. El Tlalocan era un lugar de reposo y de abundancia. Aunque los muertos eran generalmente incinerados, los predestinados a Tláloc eran enterrados, como las semillas, para germinar.

El Omeyocan, paraíso del sol, presidido por Huitzilopochtli, el dios de la guerra. A este lugar llegaban sólo los muertos en combate, los cautivos que eran sacrificados y las mujeres que morían en el parto. Estas mujeres eran comparadas a los guerreros, ya que habían librado una gran batalla, la de parir, y se les enterraba en el patio del palacio, para que acompañaran al sol desde el cenit hasta su ocultamiento por el poniente. Su muerte provocaba tristeza y también alegría, ya que, gracias a su valentía, el sol las llevaba como compañeras. Dentro de la escala de valores mesoamericana, el hecho de habitar el Omeyocan era un privilegio.

El Omeyocan era un lugar de gozo permanente, en el que se festejaba al sol y se le acompañaba con música, cantos y bailes. Los muertos que iban al Omeyocan, después de cuatro años, volvían al mundo, convertidos en aves de plumas multicolores y hermosas.
Morir en la guerra era considerada como la mejor de las muertes por los mexicas. Para ellos, a diferencia de otras culturas, dentro de la muerte había un sentimiento de esperanza, pues ella ofrecía la posibilidad de acompañar al sol en su diario nacimiento y trascender convertido en pájaro.

El Mictlán, destinado a quienes morían de muerte natural. Este lugar era habitado por Mictlantecuhtli y Mictacacíhuatl, señor y señora de la muerte. Era un sitio muy oscuro, sin ventanas, del que ya no era posible salir.
